The “strange” death of a woman aboard a Carnival cruise ship sailing from Charleston, South Carolina, to Nassau, Bahamas, last month is being looked into by the FBI. An unresponsive female passenger was attended to on February 27 by the Carnival Sunshine crew and medical personnel, according to a news release from the FBI’s Columbia field office. The announcement stated that despite their best attempts, the woman was declared dead on the ship. According to the FBI, the incident was isolated and did not represent a threat to other passengers.
According to the news release, FBI agents checked the deceased passenger’s room for evidence when the ship docked in Charleston on March 4. According to the FBI, it looks into “some crimes on the high seas” as well as mysterious deaths of American citizens. The reason for the death and the identity of the passenger have not been made public by officials, who also stated that the incident is still being looked into.
Authorities in the Bahamas and Charleston are handling the issue, according to Carnival, which stated that they are “completely cooperating” with the investigation.
“Both the deceased and her husband were debarked in Nassau and Bahamian authorities have already investigated the circumstances and are conducting an autopsy,” the cruise line said in a statement to CBS News.
