Lake Martin, Alabama – Community
Lake Martin is a man-made reservoir located in Tallapoosa, Elmore, and Coosa counties in Alabama on the Tallapoosa River. It was formed by the construction of Martin Dam on the Tallapoosa River. It was created as a result of the Tallapoosa River’s Martin Dam construction. For the Alabama Power Company, hydroelectric power is produced at the Martin Dam powerhouse. The largest man-made body of water in the world at the time was created when Martin Dam’s construction, which started in 1923 and was finished in 1926, was completed. The dam was mistakenly known as Cherokee Bluffs because of the geological structure upon which it was erected, but Thomas Martin, the president of Alabama Power Company at the time, was honored with the new name in 1936.
One of the largest man-made lakes in the United States, Lake Martin is a popular recreation area for swimming, boating, fishing, water skiing, camping, and golfing. The Dixie Sailing Club operates on Lake Martin. Many waterfront neighborhoods and luxury homes are located on Lake Martin. The cities of Alexander City, Dadeville, and Eclectic are nearby.
Lake Martin hosts many events throughout the year, including fishing tournaments, a fireworks show on the Fourth of July, and the Alexander City Jazz Festival, an annual event every June in downtown Alexander City and at the Lake Martin Amphitheatre.
Eagles nest, undeveloped beaches with natural sand, dining options, camping spots, and well-known islands are just a few of Lake Martin’s well-liked attractions. The lake is home to a number of landmarks, including the Kowaliga Bridge and a number of marinas, but Chimney Rock, a sizable rock structure that resembles a chimney, maybe the most recognizable feature on the lake. Acapulco Rock, also known as Chimney Rock, is a feature that can be found several hundred yards distant. Before Martin Dam was constructed, the area was the Tallapoosa River gorge, and the water is more than 150 feet deep. Each year, thousands of boaters stop by the location to see people scale a 60-foot rock and jump out into the lake.
Lake Martin has become a weekend getaway for many of Birmingham, Montgomery and even Atlanta. Alabama has a lake of a similar name, the Logan Martin Lake on the Coosa River, but Lake Martin and Logan Martin Lake are not part of the same river system.
