Aliquippa, Pennsylvania
Aliquippa is the largest city in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States, located on the Ohio River about 18 miles (29 km) northwest of Pittsburgh. The population was 9,238 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.
Like other towns in the region, Aliquippa, which was once the site of a significant Native American trading hub, developed to become a center for the manufacture of steel in the early 20th century. Since the 1980s, when the majority of major employers had closed, Aliquippa has experienced economic hardship.

Aliquippa, Woodlawn, and New Sheffield were the three towns that were combined to form the city. Seneca Queen Aliquippa is not known to have any direct ties to the city; rather, “Aliquippa” was one of several Indian names that the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad arbitrarily chose for stations along its route in 1878. Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church, formerly White Oak Flats Presbyterian Church, was founded about 1793 in the New Sheffield area on Brodhead Road, making it the oldest church inside the current boundaries of Aliquippa.
The Jones and Laughlin Steel Company built a prosperous steel mill in Aliquippa near the Ohio River beginning in 1905. This is the reason for the town’s fame. In 1940, employment at the plant provided for a population of 27,023. The steel industry collapsed in the 1980s, forcing the mill to close in 1984. It was destroyed in 1988.
