According to officials, a shooter at Michigan State University has left at least three people dead. Police reported that in addition to the three deaths, the suspect had allegedly died from a “self-inflicted gunshot wound.” In the incident late on Monday at the main campus in the community of East Lansing, five more individuals were hurt.
The suspect was identified by police as “a black guy, of shorter stature.” Later, they claimed that he was 43-year-old Anthony McRae and unrelated to the university.
During the manhunt, police issued a shelter-in-place order for locals and students, but they eventually dropped it after determining that there was “no longer a threat to campus.” Anthony McRae was “found off campus,” they added.
Anthony McRae, the suspect appeared in prior photographs wearing a denim jacket, a navy baseball cap, and red athletic shoes. On Monday, just after 20:00 local time, shooting began (01:00 GMT Tuesday).
When police arrived at the scene of the assault, they discovered victims at the nearby Michigan State University Union building and at Berkey Hall on the north side of the campus.
The police reported many crime scenes and stated their investigation was ongoing during a news briefing. It is unknown what motivated Anthony McRae. A number of ambulances were seen making their way to the scene, and the injured, some of whom are reportedly in critical condition, are currently receiving medical care at hospitals.
Deputy Chief Chris Rozman of the campus police department declared, “This truly has been a nightmare that we are enduring today. There will be no campus events for at least 48 hours. Detroit is located around 70 miles (112 km) to the northwest of East Lansing.
