Maryland – Shawn J. Soper was admitted to the hospital on Saturday evening at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin due to a medical emergency. He passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. Age-wise, he was 59. Shawn exemplified the kind of straightforward, impartial reporting that all aspiring journalists should study and practice.

Who was Shawn Soper?

Shawn was up in the Baltimore region and attended Loch Raven High School, where he graduated in 1981. He has always had a thing for seaside resort towns. Throughout his formative years, he spent a lot of time at Ocean City, calling it his summertime home away from home for many years. Shawn relocated permanently to Ocean City after earning degrees in mass communication and history from Towson State University in 1985. He spent many years at the former Crisfield II and loved working in the restaurant business, where he met a ton of friends who became his extended family. Later, he and some pals would launch their own eatery, Sausalito’s, in West Ocean City.

The Dispatch recruited Shawn in 2000 to cover the Berlin-Worcester County beat. A few years later, he would wed Trish in front of his family and a large gathering of friends. Shawn Soper was a well-liked friend who had a terrific sense of humor. Because of his kindness, humility, readiness to assist anyone and compassion, he earned the respect of many people.

He was a skilled reporter who could negotiate the minefield of community journalism. The subjects of stories are frequently people we are familiar with. The work frequently develops challenges and demands specific to the sector. His intention was to simply and objectively report what occurs. Shawn was fair and accurate, which helped him win people’s respect and adoration. More than being first, he coveted being right. He rarely made mistakes, but when he did, he took responsibility for them and corrected them.

Funeral arrangements for Shawn Soper are pending.
