Details about the death of US paramedic and aid worker Pete Reed
Pete Reed, a 33-year-old American paramedic, was killed while helping to evacuate civilians from Bakhmut. His patient, a Ukrainian woman, was also killed. Members of his ream were wounded. The ambulance was targeted and hit by a Russian anti-tank-guided missile.
Reed, a former US marine, had come to Ukraine through the medical aid group Global Outreach Doctors. Reedās wife, Alex Kay Potter, believes the attack on the aid workers was intentional and says that their ambulance was clearly marked.
āIt wasnāt just some random artillery double-tap ā they were being tracked. They were very much targeted.ā
The airborne missile and the explosion were seen on video by Erko Laidinen, a 35-year-old Estonian volunteer medic from
frontlinemedics.org, who was in a car parked across the street. Fragment by fragment, the video is instructive. Russian missiles are fired from low altitude and can be seen heading straight for Reed’s white van ambulance, which is parked nearby. Reed and his team were dressed casually and traveling in plain, unmarked cars.
Pete Reed was a native of New Jersey. NJ Governor Phil Murphy stated:
āI can speak on behalf of our entire state to say that our hearts are heavy today. Pete Reedās death serves as a devastating reminder of the catastrophic suffering that this unjustified war has caused. New Jersey will continue to stand on the side of the Ukrainian people in their valiant effort to fight back against Russiaās brutal invasion.ā
