According to the crash report from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, the SUV carrying four members of the University of Georgia football team, two of whom were murdered, was traveling faster than the 40 mph limit before it hit a curb and exited the road.
Devin Willock, a football player for the University of Georgia, and Chandler LeCroy, a staff member, perished in the collision. According to the investigation, LeCroy’s Ford Expedition “failed to negotiate a left turn, causing the vehicle to contact a curb with its front passenger tire and leave the roadway,” before hitting “a (Georgia) Power Pole and another utility pole, chopping them in two.”
After hitting the two poles, the vehicle “struck a tree with its rear passenger quarter panel and caused it to begin rotating clockwise where it struck another tree with its driver’s side,” the report continued. According to the accident report, Willock, who was seated behind LeCroy on the driver’s side, was thrown from the car as it slammed into the corner of an apartment building. LeCroy, 24, was declared dead at a hospital while Willock, 20, passed away at the spot.
The 26-year-old woman sitting in the rear seat on the passenger side of the car, Victoria Bowles, was hurt many times as a result of the incident. After the crash, she was taken to the hospital. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report that was made public on Tuesday, but the specific injuries are redacted.
The front seat passenger, identified as 21-year-old Warren McClendon, sustained a laceration to his head during the crash, the report says. McClendon’s father told the Athens Banner-Herald that his son needed stitches but is “doing well.”
The report lists the “First Harmful Event” in the accident as hitting the curb and the “Most Harmful Event” as hitting a tree. It does not specify how fast the vehicle was going. click here to read more.
