The road was moist and a light mist was falling at the time of the collision, just after 2:30 a.m., according to troopers. They contend that the weather, drink, and speed contributed to the collision. Dela Cruz allegedly ran off Roseland Road in Aberdeen close to Batchelor Farm Road’s intersection and collided with a tree. He died at the scene.
Dela Cruz of Dean Avenue in Southern Pines was a student at Pinecrest High School. Troopers did not release the names of the others in the car but said both were also teenagers.
